Making Good Men Better in Council Bluffs Since 1869

What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry (or Masonry) is the oldest fraternal organization in the world. Though its origins can be traced to the stonemasons and cathedral builders of Medieval times, Freemasonry remains a vital force in the daily lives of millions of men across the globe.

Through a series of degrees and ceremonies, the values of Freemasonry are passed from generation to generation, Mason to Mason, in a timeless and tireless effort to make good men better. These degrees provide a framework that affects every aspect of modern life and are based on the values of brotherly love, relief, and truth.

Every year in virtually every city and town across America, thousands of men join the ranks of Freemasonry. Men of honor and integrity. Of charity and obligation. Each with a vow to be the best they can be. To be more than just a man. To be a Mason.

Our Rich History

Excelsior Lodge No. 259 stands as a beacon of Masonic excellence in Council Bluffs, Iowa. For over 150 years since our charter on June 2, 1869, we have been dedicated to fostering brotherhood, charity, and moral growth among our esteemed members.

Born amid the post-Civil War boom of Council Bluffs, our lodge was founded by George W. Lininger and fellow Master Masons as the city grew into a key railroad hub. Through the years, we earned the reputation as the "railroad lodge" with many members connected to the railroad industry that transformed our city.

Our history includes many milestones: the building of our Masonic Temple in 1884, the election of member Thomas Bowman as Grand Master of Iowa in 1893, and our continued growth through the early 20th century. By 1907, our membership had swelled to 250 brothers from all walks of life.

Today, we continue to honor our rich heritage while looking forward to the future, always striving to make good men better and to serve Council Bluffs with distinction as part of the Grand Lodge of Iowa, A.F. & A.M.
